Methods for Dementia Research CAD600

Introduction

This unit provides students with a working knowledge of the major research methods and design approaches used to build the evidence base in health and social care, neurobiology, policies and systems, and public health. We examine major research methods and use this knowledge to discuss research papers, leading to critical evaluations of method. This unit will enable students to engage with the primary literature, develop a critical sense of the nature of publications, evidence, and the trustworthiness of sources, and understand what constitutes a ‘healthy’ paper and, by extension, good research. This knowledge base is essential for the research-oriented content of the 700 level units in the Master of Dementia.

Explore commonly employed research approaches to areas such as: - dementia care and aged care; - dementia neurobiology, including clinical translation; - policy and systems design for health care related to dementia; - epidemiology and other public health relevant research, including outcome measures; and discuss the nature of evidence they generate
Employ knowledge of research techniques in designing translational research, to inform practice or add to the evidence base for policy decisions
Analyse and critique the assumptions, strengths, and shortcomings of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research techniques
Evaluate the methods used in techniques such as meta-analysis, systematic review and similar approaches
