Students should attend this Unit at their allocated Clinical School.

Assessment

Formative Assessment: Portfolio of Learning The formative components of the portfolio may vary across clinical schools. There are essential components of the portfolio which are common to the three schools and become part of the summative exit assessment. There would normally be a review of portfolios conducted at Clinical School level to monitor progress. Each clinical school may provide formative assessment opportunities relative to clinical knowledge and skills developed in rotations.

Summative Assessment: All three clinical schools share summative assessments. This will consist of two written (MCQ and EMQ) examinations, clinical (OSCE) components, and portfolio assessment (see handbook for detailed criteria).The essential components of the portfolio are:1. a log of skills, in which procedures seen and/or performed during the hospital and community placements are recorded;2. two Reflective Journal Pieces, written in a prescribed format of at least 1000 words in length, that assess the Domain of Health and Society and the Domain of Professionalism and Leadership;3. an assessment for each clinical attachment signed off by the supervising senior medical clinician (Consultant or General Practitioner), based on performance during the attachment, including performance in written and clinical assessment tasks set by the discipline concerned during the attachment;4. complete a minimum of 10 satisfactory Mini-CEX reviews per year with representation from each major rotation;5. evidence of participation in CBL sessions;6. an introduction regarding the student's professional attributes, capabilities, aspirations, community engagement and achievements.

To PASS the year overall requires: achieving the desired competency on the written MCQ and EMQ examinations; achieving the desired competency in the OSCE stations examined and obtaining a satisfactory achievement in all elements of the portfolio submission. The result awarded for this Unit is an Ungraded Pass (UP).In Year 4, all elements of the portfolio must be submitted prior to the November MCQ and EMQ papers and OSCE summative assessment, or the candidate will be deemed to have failed the course.
