Introduction

This unit develops knowledge and skills relating to the role of Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) in developing, enforcing, evaluating and advising on legislative, legal and policy instruments designed to protect and manage environmental health across all jurisdictions. A thorough understanding of relevant legislation, the prosecution process and other legal frameworks is vitally important to the practice of an environmental health professional. Major topics covered include: an introduction to law and government, public health law, planning and
environmental law, local laws, administrative law and investigation processes.

  • Describe law making and policy development processes and factors that influence policy and legislation relevant to environmental health.
  • Interpret and apply public and environmental health legislation.
  • Apply knowledge of legal authority and requirements to act in accordance with the purpose of legislation and ethical standards for authorised persons/officers (e.g. duty of care, confidentiality, powers of entry).
  • Apply skills in investigation and prosecution procedures.
  • Explain compliance options (legislative and non-legislative) including their strengths, limitations and legislative requirements.
  • Communicate legislative requirements to diverse audiences.
