Neuroscience B CHP312

Introduction

The aim of this unit is to build on the knowledge you have gained regarding the structure and function of the nervous system in CHP311 and relate that to our current understanding of how the nervous system functions, for example in learning and memory, and to our current understanding of selected diseases and disorders of the nervous system. We will incorporate neuroscience theory with learning about experimental techniques, analysis methods and selected diseases and disorders of the nervous system to understand how and why neuroscience research is conducted.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe basic anatomical and biochemical knowledge of selected major diseases and disorders of the nervous system.
  • Describe how fundamental experimental and analysis techniques are used in Neuroscience Research.
  • Describe appropriate experimental controls for given experimental techniques.
  • Critically evaluate neuroscience research questions posed in the literature, through your knowledge of neuroscience theory, experimental and analytical techniques.
  • Pose a potentially testable neuroscience question and justify it based on research in the literature and explain how you would test it experimentally and analyse the question.
