Introduction
This unit introduces students to the various understandings of health and models of healthcare in contemporary Australia. Factors that determine and influence health and illness are explored. The experience of health and illness is considered in the context of individuals, families and communities, with particular emphasis on vulnerable and marginalised population groups. The concepts of rights and justice related to access and distribution of health care will be explored. Contemporary healthcare philosophies and approaches are introduced and applied. The unit is contextualised to the Australian healthcare reform agenda, emphasising a shift in focus from institutional to community settings and from sick-care to wellness and prevention. The importance of health data and management of information in healthcare, inter-professional collaboration, community development and the empowerment of consumers to be active participants in their own health and health care are highlighted. Students will have the opportunity to further develop their Professional Portfolio in this unit.
