Psychological Therapies in Mental Health Care CNA739
Introduction
Unit CNA739 introduces students to psychological therapies used in mental health settings, either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with pharmacological interventions. Participants will be involved actively in a series of cognitive behaviour workshops either by synchronous online participation or via recordings. Students are encouraged to also actively engage with the discussion board on MyLO. The unit’s major focus addresses CBT principles, resources and practical skills in relation to managing anxiety disorders, depression and psychosis. The online workshops address and examine the application of CBT principles and strategies with adults, children and adolescents, with the primary focus on adults with a mental health problem/illness.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an increased knowledge and understanding of a range of therapeutic modalities used in the management of mental health problems and illnesses.
- Identify the core principles of CBT and describe the main CBT theoretical constructs.
- Design person centred CBT management program suitable for an individual.
- Critically analyse the contemporary role of the mental health nurse as therapist.
