Foundations of Occupational Therapy CXA716
Introduction
The unit introduces key occupational therapy terminology related to the meaning and value of occupation, and concepts that are foundational to occupational therapy practice. Students will examine the interplay between sociological, psychological and environmental factors that influence health and wellbeing. Using occupation as the organising framework of occupational therapy, students investigate theories, models and the science of occupation to consider the relationship between mental health, wellbeing, and human occupation. The links between the human need to engage in occupation and the various psychological processes that influence participation are also examined as the basis for optimising the enablement of occupation.

Learning Outcomes
- Analyse concepts in occupation including occupational performance, enablement, participation, and justice.
- Apply evidence-informed occupational therapy processes and practices to support people’s meaningful participation in occupations.
- Analyse and explain the relationship between occupation, health and wellbeing.
- Analyse sociological and psychological theories, as well as perspectives on mental health and illness, and their relationship to occupational therapy practice.
- Critically reflect on and recognise the effect of own values and beliefs in occupational therapy for ethical and culturally responsive and safe manner practice.
- Use theoretical and practical knowledge of Recovery in the application of occupational therapy process and practice for working with clients with mental health conditions.
