Engineering Design ENG200

Introduction

This unit aims to develop engineering analysis and design knowledge and skills within a multi-disciplinary, sustainable engineering context to ideate, design, optimise and build a prototype. You will work in a team to analyse a problem in terms of its context, dilemma and objective prior to developing a conceptual design, before you enter a next stage of following a reference design and building a solution. At the end you will engage with an engineering design competition.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Learning Outcomes

  • Design and refine a solution to an engineering problem using quantitative predictions of its performance against the design brief criteria and project management skills within a team context.
  • Build a prototype of the designed solution in the engineering workshop following safe work practices and the reference design.
  • Evaluate a prototype by comparing measured performance during tests against the design predictions.
  • Apply sustainability concepts, human centred design principles, and self reflection to engineering project management and decision making components.
