Water and Wastewater Engineering ENG415

Introduction

This unit is wrapped around natural water cycle, and includes background knowledge about the water cycle components in the urban environments. The main objectives of the unit are to develop the knowledge & understanding, skills and attitudes associated with water, wastewater and stormwater distribution/collection and treatment systems, and to assess the environmental impacts of water/wastewater systems not operating up to standards. The topics include water and wastewater and stormwater collection/distribution and treatment systems, water sensitive urban design, design criteria, by-product management, legislation around managing water in the urban environments.

  • Identify and explain the concepts of sustainability as applied to water engineering
  • Describe the important characteristics of commonly applied water and wastewater treatment processes and understand alternative technologies (physical, chemical and biological) that may be used as effective treatments for domestic and industrial wastewaters
  • Design the major components of water and wastewater treatment systems
  • Critically evaluate the existing water systems in terms of feasibility and sustainability and propose improvements
