Introduction

The design and analysis of engineering fluid systems and marine vehicles require the prediction of the fluid behaviour and the interaction between the fluid and the system. This requires a good knowledge of thermo-fluid dynamic principles and the behaviour under varying boundary and operational conditions. This unit introduces students to numerical methods used to solve applied maritime hydrodynamics, fluid dynamics and thermo-fluid dynamics problems. It includes the use of commercial CFD packages and the analysis of results and flow visualisation to investigate the flow and behaviour of the fluid system or marine vehicle. It builds on the knowledge gained in Fluid Dynamics and relevant mathematical concepts.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.

TNE Program units special approval requirements.

* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see withdrawal dates explained for more information).

About Census Dates

Learning Outcomes

ILO 1 Apply the mathematical formulation of the basic laws governing laminar and turbulent fluid flow, including heat transfer.

ILO 2 Evaluate the hydrodynamic coefficients and characteristics of marine vehicles, structures, and systems.

ILO 3 Develop appropriate mesh domains for CFD investigations into typical maritime vehicles, structures, and systems to obtain accurate and stable simulations.

ILO 4 Explain the various flow characteristics and mathematical turbulence models.

ILO 5 Document the evaluation in the form of a technical report to professional written standards.
