Modelling and Simulation of Marine Systems JEE506

Students must have access to MATLAB/Simulink software. The student version is acceptable.

Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of modelling and simulation techniques and their application to the analysis of marine engineering systems. Students are introduced to numerical methods, control systems, first and second order systems, and the associated modelling strategies. This unit is structured around the application software MATLAB/Simulink which students will use to create programs that simulate marine systems such as pump-pipe networks, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), marine electrical systems, and propulsion systems.
The intensive learning sessions begin with learning activities on representations of dynamic systems, theory modelling of marine systems and numerical methods. Topics on theoretical modelling and simulation techniques lead on to programming activities with MATLAB and Simulink. The MALTAB and Simulink simulation programs can be used to predict dynamics of marine systems and they are validated with realistic marine systems.

  • 5. Use computer simulation programs to learn behaviour and characteristics of the simulated marine systems under varying conditions.
