Introduction
This unit provides students with an understanding of the practice and application of molecular biology and technology in marine and aquatic ecosystems. Students learn and practice modern molecular techniques used to characterise, manipulate and compare DNA, RNA and proteins, use of public web-based bioinformatic databases and molecular biology analysis software. Students gain theoretical knowledge of and practical experience in molecular biology and how it can be used to understand the evolution and diversity of aquatic organism and populations, investigate biological processes in aquatic organisms and ecosystems, and improve the selection and performance of species used in aquaculture. The ethical and social issues associated with genetically modified organisms and current/future molecular technologies are also discussed.
