This unit covers the theoretical, technical and ethical use of molecular biology to investigate aquatic systems. Students learn the theory, techniques and practice of molecular biology and its application in fields of aquaculture and fisheries, and aquatic biology and ecology. Students gain detailed knowledge of the structure and function of DNA/RNA and proteins, and the methods by which these molecules can be characterised, manipulated and analysed. Molecular biology is a rapidly changing field and the unit content is regularly updated to reflect technological development.

- Describe and explain the structure, synthesis and function DNA, RNA and proteins, and how these molecules are expressed.
- Explain and critically evaluate molecular approaches applied to problems and questions in aquaculture and marine biology/ecology.
- Describe, design and carry-out basic molecular biology approaches used to isolate, characterise, manipulate and analyse DNA/RNA data.
- Access and use common bioinformatic web-based resources/databases and analysis software, to collect, organise, analyse and interpret molecular data.
