Marine Environment and Society JFA531
Introduction
This unit provides students with an understanding of the relationship between society and the marine environment and the varied and contested nature of these connections. Students will learn about different stakeholder groups and their interests in the marine environment, with emphasis on the fisheries sector (wild catch, recreational, traditional and subsistence). This unit introduces students to the range of values associated with the marine environment. Students will gain an appreciation of the co-management approaches that have been developed to incorporate the diverse interests of fisheries stakeholders into the marine resources management process. Students will be introduced to social survey data collection methods and the use of social impact assessment techniques.
