Marine Transportation I JND286
Introduction
On completion of this unit a student will be able to properly plan, load, carry and deliver various types of cargoes including cargoes of hazardous and perishable nature. The unit discusses the industry practices and procedures appropriate to the type of cargo and ships they are carried, the development of cargo handling equipment and the regulatory requirements to be complied with. This unit builds on the knowledge gained in year 1 and meets the learning outcomes set out in Table A -II/1 of STCW 2010 and detailed in the Maritime Training Package MAR50315.

Learning Outcomes
- Have adequate knowledge and understanding of legislation governing the carriage of goods by sea.
- Have adequate knowledge and understanding of safe handling, stowage and securing of cargoes, including dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes, and their effect on the safety of life and of the ship.
- Have adequate knowledge and understanding of monitoring cargo operations, communication and port watch keeping.

Teaching Pattern | Blended delivery in the form of lectures and online learning supplemented with consolidated face to face learning towards the end of semester. Students attending classes and students electing to study on flexible mode will follow the same class timetable. Total lecturing hours have not changed from the existing. Both categories of students will have access to the same resources through MyLO. Lectures Duration/ Frequency/Time tabling: 4 hrs / 1/ week for 10 weeks. Total Hrs 40. Practicals Duration/ Frequency/Time tabling: 30 hrs delivered over last 3 weeks. Total Hrs 30. |
