Courses & Units
Ship Stability and Seaworthiness JND287
Introduction
On completion of this unit, students will have the knowledge and skills to be able to demonstrate a comprehension of the principles relating to ships stability and seaworthiness and be able to calculate statical stability of a ship while acknowledging the importance of dynamical stability, making sure that the vessel complies with the IMO stability criteria under all loaded conditions and calculate the vessel’s stress and stability for all stages of the intended voyage.
This unit builds on the knowledge gained in the year 1 “Shipboard Operations” and meets the learning outcomes set out in Table A -II/1 of STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and detailed in the Maritime Training Package MAR 50313.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate the knowledge of the principles that determines the stability of a vessel.
- Determine the factors effecting on draft and freeboard and calculate moment of statical stability, position of centre of gravity, and free surface effect.
- Identify the features of the load-line and draught marks of a ship and perform related calculations.
- Extract, interpret and use ship’s stability data from relevant sources and draw righting lever curves. That includes both manual and computer based resources.
