Marine Thermodynamics JNE239
Introduction
Thermodynamics is an important area within the engineering discipline with extensive ¿¿applications in marine auxiliaries and machinery. The purpose of this unit is to provide ¿¿the necessary knowledge and skills in understanding the design concepts and ¿applying basic ¿thermodynamic principles in the safe operation of main and auxiliary ¿equipment. This unit ¿develops skills in managing the efficient operation of such plants ¿and machinery at the ¿management level of marine engineers.¿
The unit focuses on both thermodynamic problems and solving operational theory ¿relevant to ¿equipment for shipboard use. A student completing this unit will be able to ¿apply the ¿knowledge gained and understand the safe and economical operation ¿and management ¿of marine machinery.¿
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out ¿by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) ¿and, Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code.¿

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates
Study Period | Start date | Census date | WW date | End date |
---|---|---|---|---|
Semester 1 | 20/2/2023 | 21/3/2023 | 10/4/2023 | 28/5/2023 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2023 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2023 will be available from the 1st October 2022. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).
Learning Outcomes
- Apply knowledge of basic thermodynamic system properties and thermodynamic ¿¿cycles to thermodynamic systems in marine use.¿
- Demonstrate knowledge of various thermodynamic processes/cycles by relating ¿them to ¿marine equipment and types of machinery like heat exchangers, air ¿compressors, and steam ¿systems, combustion processes in internal combustion ¿engines, refrigeration, and air ¿conditioning systems.¿
- Solve thermodynamic set problems by using tools such as graphs, charts, tables, ¿and ¿formulae in the above-mentioned systems.¿
- Analyse thermodynamic system performance as applied to marine systems to ¿¿make decisions on effective management of such systems.¿
