GIS: Introduction KGG102
Students who do not have basic PC knowledge and familiarity with Windows should contact the unit coordinator before enrolment.
Introduction
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming increasingly prevalent in our day-to-day lives. As a result, skilled GIS analysts are
in high demand across the workforce. The goal of this unit is to provide you with a foundational understanding of the concepts
underpinning GIS as a discipline, and aid you in developing the practical skills you need to put this knowledge into action.
Throughout the unit you will be introduced to the major types of data that are used in GIS, and how they can be used to represent a wide
variety of information in a spatially explicit way. We will explore how spatial datasets are created, how they are maintained, and how they
can be used to solve problems. We will also introduce you to the principles of cartographic design, with a focus on creating high quality
mapped outputs that clearly communicate information across a number of broad themes.
GIS by its nature is an inherently interdisciplinary field. Any phenomena or process that occurs in a spatially explicit way can be
incorporated, used, and interpreted using GIS. This unit draws from both scientific and social applications, and can provide valuable skills
to students from all degree programs.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
