Network Administration and Security KIT216

Introduction

This unit builds on the fundamentals of distributed networked environments explored in KIT111 Data Networks and Security and extends your knowledge of internetworking standards to consider advanced topics such as network scalability, quality of service, reliability and fault tolerance, efficiency, and security. It will equip you with an understanding of: the OSI model framework; switching concepts, switch security (including access control and identifying LAN security threats), VLANs and inter-VLAN routing, trunking and dynamic trunking, loop-free topologies with spanning tree protocols, link aggregation and automatic negotiation, dynamic addressing with first-hop redundancy protocols for reliability and fault tolerance. Practical activities include the configuration and analysis of real networking hardware coupled with investigation of complex scenarios and topologies through simulation.
