Introduction

This course will introduce you to a range of principles, concepts and technologies in network security. As a field it is constantly increasing in importance with it being a consideration for most companies with web presence, or a private network that is connected to the Internet.

In this unit students will spend time in lectures learning about the technologies used to secure networks of various sizes against a range of different attacks. Some of these will be explored in tutorials also, however, a sizeable portion of the tutorial time will also comprise gaining some practical experience with security tools undertaking penetration testing.

Elementary networking and security topics will be covered to set the scene before we go into depth on network security. Security Policies, Cryptographic protocols and network infrastructure are the main focus points of this unit as we learn how to defend networks from attack.
