Introduction

PLEASE NOTE: students should access important unit information from the Chemistry website prior to the start date.

This unit aims to provide you with an introduction to chemical principles sufficient to be used as a pre-requisite for first year chemistry units at the University of Tasmania. It is not designed to be a replacement for year 12 chemistry as it only covers the major topics of direct relevance as a background to the first year chemistry units. Topics include the nature of matter, the fundamentals of chemical structure and bonding and chemical reactions, the states of matter, an introduction to chemical analysis, acid base chemistry and organic chemistry.

The Chemistry Foundation Unit operates in two different formats. Semesters 1 and 2 are held on campus and in distance mode with weekly tutorial workshops on campus or on-line. The compulsory laboratory sessions can be completed throughout the semester or as a workshop towards the end of semester. Students need to indicate their preference at the start of semester. Semester 3 (Summer School) from the 2nd of January operate as on-line self-paced programs with compulsory laboratory sessions requiring on-campus attendance held in February towards the end of the theoretical component. The laboratory sessions are held either at the Hobart or the Launceston campus. Students are also required to sit an exam during the scheduled exam period.

The overall aim of the unit is to provide a strong working knowledge and competency in general chemistry to a level appropriate for further studies in chemistry.

The grades to be awarded include Pass (50-59%), Credit (60-69%), Distinction (70-79%) and High Distinction (80+%). Failing grades will also be awarded. Students who successfully complete the Chemistry Foundation Unit with a grade of Pass or better and who have satisfied one of the following: pass in MTG315115 or MTM315117 or MTM415117 or KMA002 or KMA003 or HSC equivalent or TCE score of 80 or above, will be eligible for enrolment in first year chemistry units at the University.

Semester 3: 6 weeks self-directed full time study (120 hours) with access for help from the Unit Coordinator by email or phone and 2 compulsory laboratory workshop days (14 hours in total)requiring attendance at either the Hobart or Launceston campus.

Semesters 1&2: 2 hr tutorial workshop and either 2.5 hrs practical fortnightly (6 wks) or 2-3 workshop days during semester.

Semesters 1 & 2: Test 10% (1 hr); Exam 35% (3 hr); Assignments 30%; Tutorials 5%; Laboratory 20%.
