The unit will develop knowledge and skills in research that is oriented towards marine and Antarctic science. Research training will be provided through workshops, seminars, and completion of a research project in an appropriate area of marine and Antarctic science or science policy. Students will be required to further develop their communication skills and understanding of marine and Antarctic science/policy through the analysis and interpretation of research results, and communication of their research in a seminar and manuscript or technical report.

- Evaluate and synthesize published information and key concepts within marine and Antarctic studies
- Plan a program of research investigating a defined problem or question within constraints imposed by time, money and technical resources
- Communicate research concepts and findings in marine and Antarctic studies in a logical manner and a variety of formats used by professionals in the field
- Develop a coherent argument supported by evidence based on published literature and/or research data.
- Conduct a research project in marine and Antarctic Studies by applying skills in literature research methods, data collection and analysis, and relevant field and/or laboratory techniques
