Join the Library

Members of the public are welcome to visit our libraries during staffed hours to consult physical collections and access selected electronic resources. Borrowing services are available to Tasmanian residents only.

Alumni

As a University of Tasmania graduate, you can still use some Library Services after you complete your studies

Borrowing Physical Items (Tasmanian residents only)

After you graduate, you'll have 4 months where your current Library borrowing stays active. After this period:

  • If you want to keep borrowing physical books and place requests, you'll need to sign up as a Community Borrower
  • We will set you up with a My Library Password so that you can request and manage your loans
  • Complete the online application form

Accessing Online Resources

Graduates from 2025 onwards

  • Access to a selected list of alumni online Library resources for 12 months after graduation
  • You can log into the resources with your UTAS usename and password
  • If you do not have access to your UTAS email username and password. you will need to contact the Service Desk
  • After 12 months, access to these online resources will end automatically

Graduates prior to 2025

  • If you completed the alumni email security upgrade (accepted new terms and set up multi-factor authentication), you can continue to access alumni licensed electronic resources on an ongoing basis
  • If you didn't complete this process, your alumni email account has now been permanently closed
  • If you need help recovering old email data from a closed account, contact UConnect U.Connect@utas.edu.au

Access to Electronic Resources on Campus

If you don't have active alumni online access, you can still view most electronic resources when visiting one of our Library locations.

  • Use the dedicated catalogue computers to view most online resources
  • Some licensing restrictions may apply

If your Alumni library borrowing card has expired and you would still like to borrower items from our collections, please email us. You must include the following

General Public Members

  • Borrowing services are available to Tasmanian residents only from within some of our collections.

School Students

The University of Tasmania Library provides an introduction for school students to the University environment and is offered in partnership with Tasmanian Schools

Note: If you are a Year 11/12 student already enrolled in the University Connections Program, you should already have access to the University of Tasmania Library.

To join

Complete the application form, ensuring that you:

  • Provide your school email address (not hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc)
  • Print and have your parent, guardian or responsible adult complete the application consent form  (PDF 87KB)
  • Attach consent form with your online application

  • Access an online Library Guide, including Resources for Secondary Schools guide
  • Get help from University of Tasmania Library staff

Students & Staff of other Universities

University of Tasmania Library borrower membership is available to current staff and students (based in Tasmania) from universities who participate in the following reciprocal borrowing program. This membership is free and eligibility criteria apply.

List of participating universities

Students of Universities not participating in ULANZ are welcome to join as a member of the General Public .

Open University students enrolled at other universities may join as a member of the general public.

Members within Tasmania of - University of the Third Age (U3A) are welcome to join as a member of the General Public.

  • Provide supporting documentation with your application : Photo ID, proof of enrolment or membership to another university & evidence of current Tasmanian address
  • When you are registering we will set you up with a Library Password so that you can request and manage your loans
