About the research project

Entanglements between food, culture, and society converge often converge in domestic settings, providing opportunities to allow researchers to develop deep insights into how people lived and laboured in times and places different from our own. This research project delves into the captivating realms of food history and colonial domesticity in lutruwita/Tasmania across the period during which the island was known as Van Diemen's Land. Successful applicants may draw on a diverse range of historical sources including written archives (government records, private correspondence, diaries, newspapers), objects, and images to understand better the culinary and/or domestic practices and exchanges that shaped the colonial experience. Proposed projects focusing on the first half of the nineteenth century may canvass convict and/or broader colonial life with foci on food and/or clothing and other facets of domestic life with 'home' being broadly interpreted as a colonial house, farm, probation or penal station, or female factory, etc. Projects focusing on the latter part of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth may see applicants engaging with printed materials including recipe books and could include a focus on life during wartime. There is also scope for applicants to propose comparative colonial projects.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

  • a living allowance stipend of $32,192 per annum (2024 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
  • a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
  • a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.

As part of the application process you may indicate if you do not wish to be considered for scholarship funding.

The project is competitively assessed and awarded.  Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:

  • First class honours or equivalent in History or Food Studies

Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:

  • Background in qualitative research methods
