About the research project

There has been a significant shift in models of environmental regulation in recent years, away from prescriptive 'command and control' techniques, towards market driven approaches. Key to these approaches are models of self-reporting and disclosure, especially the expectation that companies will report material financial risks posed by climate change and, more recently the degradation of natural systems, through the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures and the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures.

These approaches are largely untested. A key concern is that these mechanisms focus primarily on the risks posed to the company, rather than the risks to climate and nature posed by the companies' activities. There is little evidence that proposed reporting standards adequately address risks to the environment and society caused by business activities in addition to risks to the business entity. This project has scope to explore different aspects of this problem. For example, it could examine whether the focus on materiality in disclosures has skewed reporting to focus more on business risk and less on non-financial social and environmental risks. It could also investigate the extent to which the 'greenwashing' phenomenon (and emerging blue washing), has set back the prevalence of disclosures of business impacts and commitments.
