About the research project

In the face of increasing natural disasters, the continued marginalization of Indigenous populations, climate crisis, social upheavals, and global conflict volunteers and volunteering emerge as crucial pillars of support. Volunteering takes many forms, from long-term, committed volunteers (e.g. volunteer firefighters), to short-term or episodic volunteers (e.g. events volunteers), and even spontaneous volunteers, such as those citizens that show up to help out with disaster strikes (e.g. 'Mud Army' flood recovery volunteers). Volunteering contributes immense economic, social, and environmental value to places and communities around the globe. Volunteering is also known to contribute to the wellbeing of individuals who engage in volunteering activities.

This Ph.D. project will explore a specific, but complex type of volunteering: corporate volunteering. The project will involve investigating the individual and organisational motives for engaging in corporate volunteering, collating, and evaluating known approaches to corporate volunteering, and determining impacts of corporate volunteering – in relation to employees, their corporate employers, as well as the peoples, places, and communities served through corporate volunteering activities.
