Location
The Honours program in Medical Science is designed to provide students with a firm foundation for further study in medicine and future vocational career pathways. The opportunity to undertake an in-depth research project will provide an important understanding of the processes of medical research in laboratory, community and clinical settings. As well as the major research project students are required to investigate and communicate analysis and outcomes of other important contemporary biomedical research.

- 1 Independently source, critically analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge to create an original work in a discipline relevant to medical research.
- 2 Design and conduct research and evaluate and interpret scientific data.
- 3 Communicate discipline-specific knowledge and ideas clearly and coherently both verbally and in writing to expert and non-expert audiences.
- 4 Conduct research in a legally, ethically, socially and culturally responsible manner.
Career outcomes
The profession of Medicine offers a diverse range of career opportunities. On completion of the MBBS, graduates will work in an approved hospital undertaking general medical training as an intern. Graduates of the BMedSc (Hons) will be well placed for advanced vocational career pathways including specialist training in one of a number of fields such as anaesthesia, dermatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, geriatric medicine, paediatrics, pathology, psychiatry, radiology and surgery.

You will complete 100 credit points of core units.
In your final semester, you will need to enrol in XSB400 which will record your final overall Honours result. This unit is administrative only and does not have classes or assessments.

Entry requirements
All applicants must have:
- Submitted a completed Project Application Confirmation Form before submitting an application for entry into the honours course (more information is available at Medical Research with Honours Projects and Application Guide).
- Completed at least three years of 100% load in M3N, or similar approved course interstate; with credit average, or equivalent.

- Additionally for international applicants: IELTS (Academic) – Overall 7.0 (target no individual band less than 7.0) - evidence is not required from applicants who have commenced, or completed, the MBBS at UTAS within the last 5 years.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course. For eligible domestic students, this means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.
We are unable to provide an indicative fee based on previous enrolments as the current structure of this course is being delivered for the first time in 2027.

HECS-HELP loans
You may be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.
