Cost Per Unit

Undergraduate or Postgraduate Coursework

To calculate the cost per unit you will need to know:

  • The study load or credit point value of the unit for the semester in which you are enrolled or are enrolling in (refer to the Course & Unit handbook for unit credit points)
  • Your Annual Course fee as stated on the Offer of Enrolment you received from International Services.

The information below should act as a guide only. Please refer to your fees invoice for confirmation of your tuition fee costs.

Tuition fees are charged per unit, based on the credit point value. A standard unit has a study load of 12.5 credit points. A full time student will study eight 12.5 credit point units in an academic year, as 8 x 12.5 credit points = 100 credit points, which is the equivalent of a full time load.

To calculate the cost of a standard unit you will need to divide your Annual Course Fee, as quoted on your Offer Letter, by eight. For example; an annual fee of $25,000 / 8 = $3,125 per 12.5 credit point unit.

Please note: This calculation does not take into consideration annual fee increases, scholarships or sponsor arrangements.

Mengying commenced the Master of Architecture in 2009.

The Annual Course Fee stated on Mengying's Offer of Enrolment is $14,500.

Mengying is enrolled in the following units:

Semester 1:
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 25 credit point unit

Semester 2:
1 x 50 credit point unit

The cost per unit is calculated as follows:
1 x (12.5 credit points x 14,500) = $1,812.50
1 x (12.5 credit points x 14,500) = $1,812.50
1 x (25 credit points x 14,500) = $3,625.00
1 x (50 credit points x $14,500) =$7,250.00

The total annual tuition fee for Mengying is $14,500

Jignesh commenced the Bachelor of Business in 2009.

The Annual Course Fee stated on Jignesh's Offer of Enrolment is $12,300.

Jignesh is enrolled in the following units:

Semester 1:
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 25 credit point unit

Semester 2:
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 25 credit point unit

Semester 5:
1 x 12.5 credit point unit

The cost per unit is calculated as follows:
1 x (12.5 credit points x 12,300) = $1,537.50
1 x (12.5 credit points x 12,300) = $1,537.50
1 x (25.0 credit points x 12,300) = $3,075.00
1 x (12.5 credit points x 12,300) = $1,537.50
1 x (12.5 credit points x 12,300) = $1,537.50
1 x (25.0 credit points x 12,300) = $3,075.00
1 x (12.5 credit points x 12,300) = $1,537.50

The total annual tuition fee for Jignesh is $13,837.50.  This is more than the Annual Course Fee stated on Jignesh's Offer of Enrolment because Jignesh enrolled in a Semester 5 unit which took his enrolment over 100 credit points for the year (to 112.5 credit points).

Chia commenced the Bachelor of Engineering 2009.

The Annual Course Fee stated on Chia's Offer of Enrolment is $16,000.

Chia is enrolled in the following units:

Semester 1:
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 25 credit point unit

Semester 2:
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 12.5 credit point unit
1 x 25 credit point unit

Chia became eligible for a 10% scholarship at the beginning of Semester 2.

The cost per unit is calculated as follows:
1 x (12.5 credit points x 16,000) = $1,537.50
1 x (12.5 credit points x 16,000) = $1,537.50
1 x (25.0 credit points x 16,000) = $3,075.00

1 x (12.5 credit points x 16,000) = $1,537.50.  Less 10% = $1,383.75
1 x (12.5 credit points x 16,000) = $1,537.50.  Less 10% = $1,383.75
1 x (25.0 credit points x 16,000) = $3,075.00.  Less 10% = $2,767.50

The total annual tuition fee for Chia is $11,685.00.

This example shows how the Annual Course Fee stated in your letter of offer determines the tuition fee you pay for a unit.  The tuition fee you pay for a unit may be different to the tuition fee your friend pays for the same unit.

Postgraduate Research

The tuition fee is calculated on a daily pro-rata basis up until the last day of candidature.

For the purpose of calculating the daily rate the year is divided into two periods: 1 January - 30 June (181 days, or 182 days in a leap year) and 1 July to 31 December (184 days).  The full time daily rate for each period is calculated by dividing the Annual Fee as stated in your Offer of Enrolment by two, then dividing by the number of days in the billing period.  Part time candidates (as per the example below) must divide this again by two.

This information should act as a guide only. Please refer to your fees invoice for confirmation of your tuition fee costs.

The example below if for a standard part time enrolment.  If you commence your studies part way into the period, suspend your enrolment or withdraw your fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Chung commenced his PhD (part time) on 1 January 2009.  The Annual Fee stated in his Offer of Enrolment was $18,000.

The fee for Chung is as follows:

First half of year
($18,000 / 2 / 182 / 2) x 182 = $4,500

Second half of year
($18,000 / 2 / 184 / 2) x 184 = $4,500
