Keeping the Tasmanian Devil alive in the wild
The Tasmanian devil is the world's largest surviving marsupial carnivore and is only found in the wild in Australia's island State of Tasmania. The species has suffered a major population decline and is now listed as Endangered. This decline is due to an infectious cancer known as Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD).
Since the disease was first seen in 1996, DFTD has spread across much of the State and devil numbers are estimated to have declined by over 80%. Some populations where the disease first emerged have declined by over 95%.
The Save the Tasmanian Devil Program was established in 2003 as the official, national response to the threat posed by DFTD. The Australian and Tasmanian Governments, the Zoo and Aquarium Association and the University of Tasmania have established this partnership to protect this keystone species. Funds are vital to support the immediate research and management strategies of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program.
One Devil. One Appeal. One Opportunity.
The Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal is the central fundraiser for the Tasmanian devil. As the philanthropic arm of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program, the Appeal seeks support to fund critical DFTD research and conservation projects.
100% of the funds raised by the Appeal go to the research and management activities that have been prioritised as important to the long-term solution to DFTD and the aim to keep Tasmanian devils sustainable in the wild as well as to facilitate the educational and publicity activities of the Appeal.
As innovative conservation strategies together with exciting steps forward in vaccine research are implemented over the next few years, your support is even more important.
You can support the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal by making a donation, conducting your own fundraiser or by becoming an Appeal Corporate Supporter. By aligning yourself with the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal, you are actively putting up your hand to help us to save an iconic species from extinction.
