Hobart Accommodation FAQs

The University of Tasmania will add more than 300 student beds ahead of Semester 1 2019.

Work is underway on four projects with a view to having beds available, which will allow the University to relieve the stress and uncertainty for students as they head into Christmas. The y include the acquisition of a new inner-city property, additional beds at the MidCity Apartments, renovations at the Theatre Royal Hotel and expanding the existing operation at College Road in Sandy Bay.

Our Student Living team is working on a one-on-one basis with students to help provide the best outcome. We have had teams working around the clock to find solutions and we have now found a way to provide more than 300 extra beds for southern accommodation. These beds will be provided for commencing students so that students in our residences this year will be able to stay in them if they would like. Offers will continue to be made by the Student Living Team until there is no availability left in University student accommodation. We will let you know as soon as we can. We are also looking at ways to assist students who want to follow the traditional path of moving on from University accommodation to a house or apartment in the private market.

The Student Living Team continues to offer accommodation to students already residing in the Hobart Apartments. As we undertake this process we will work towards students remaining in their original room, however, we cannot at this stage guarantee this outcome. Where possible, we will do our best to allocate first preferences, although we may not achieve this for every application. Our Student Living team are working with students individually to deal with their unique circumstances.

We have a dedicated team of Student Living staff who can help you with your individual circumstances. Teams have been set up to help support new students directly with housing related issues and provide additional support on a broader range of issues that students may wish to seek advice on which relates to their current circumstances through counsellors, international student advisors and other specialist areas.

We have had teams working around the clock to find solutions and we have found a way to provide more than 300 extra beds for southern accommodation.

Our staff will be continuing to work throughout the summer to deliver the four projects for Semester 1 next year that will give us those 300+ beds. They include:

  • the acquisition of a new inner-city property, which will provide up to 99 beds;
  • expanding the existing operation at College Road in Sandy Bay to deliver a further 180 beds.
  • work to create a further 21 beds at the MidCity Apartments;
  • renovations at the Theatre Royal Hotel, which will add 16 new beds;

Expanding the existing College Road precinct, which includes John Fisher and Christ colleges, as well as the University Apartments, will significantly ease pressure on student accommodation. This new area, will be part of the existing community with all its student-support services, social spaces and catering, such as Pepperz Café Bar Restaurant, will be available to incoming students.

The expansion at College Road will be delivered working with local architects and using quality, pre-fabricated accommodation. These are familiar practices to us, having used them in the delivery of the student apartments at Inveresk, in Launceston. We aim to pull together a vibrant new precinct based on the success of similar projects in Europe and elsewhere.
