Nice ‘n Easy: a woven history
Nice 'n Easy: a woven history presents artist Naomi Ullmann's response to the University's Tyler Collection. Naomi recently visited Romania for the first time to explore the places of her parents' childhood and the source of family stories and memorabilia. As survivors of the Romanian Jewish Holocaust, her parents, Shula and Jona, met and married in Tel Aviv after the war, eventually emigrating to Australia in 1956 where a new and optimistic future opened for them and their family. Many of the Romanian artists represented in the Tyler Collection lived parallel but vastly different lives, creating art under the brutal dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu (1967-1989). Retracing her parents' footsteps took Naomi on a journey of identity, belonging, absence, and above all, resilience, something she identified also in the works and lives of the Tyler artists.

This video documents aspects of Naomi Ullmann’s first visit to Romania - her parents’ home village, the synagogue, ‘Lady Maria’ weaving the cloth used in this exhibition, and the local sunflower seed press - a centre of community life. It includes her parents Shula and Jona speaking of their childhood memories before the Second World War.
