Announcing 2026 Tyler Fellow
The 2026 Tyler Visiting Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Ioan Oprea.
During his visit to the University of Tasmania, Dr Oprea will work in particular with over sixty icons from the Tyler Collection, sharing his knowledge and extending our understanding of the rich history and meaning they carry.
The biennial award supports researchers, art historians, and artists to travel to Tasmania for a minimum of two weeks and engage with the Tyler Collection. This Fellowship was made possible by the generous support of Geoffrey and Frances Tyler.
About the 2026 recipient
Dr. Ioan Oprea is a conservator and curator at Museikon, the new Department of Eclesiastic Art of The National Museum of The Union in Alba Lulia, Romania. He is a Fellow of The British Museum International Training Program (2019), a member of The European Museum Academy and has participated in conferences and international courses across Europe.
Ioan holds a PhD in History and has also studied Orthodox Theology. He is interested in the conservation of cultural heritage and art, museum methods and practices, and seeks to acquire a deeper understanding of the museum profession worldwide. Ioan has curated a number of art exhibitions and written several catalogues. Through interactive workshops he offers an insight into the world of the museum collection, developing its role in teaching and learning, and engaging an audience with the wealth of ideas and stories held within.
