The latawina Blak Health Collective is seeking to commission a Palawa artist or designer to create a unique design that represents the latawina Blak Health Collective portfolio. This artwork will be used across a range of promotional and merchandising avenues to visually reflect our values, community, and purpose.

The latawina Blak Health Collective (latawina) is the Aboriginal Health portfolio within UTAS Health, comprising of exclusively Aboriginal staff and led by Professor Jen Evans. latawina provides leadership for all Aboriginal business at UTAS Health, including cultural support to Aboriginal students in Health, Aboriginal research, teaching and cultural safety across all health disciplines. Our focus is to lead health justice and equity for Aboriginal peoples.

We have been honoured with the name ‘latawina’ by the palawa kani Language Program, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines. latawina means Black lead, the mineral graphite. We interpret the meaning of latawina as it applies to the latawina Blak Health Collective as relating to our leadership and work being about strength, solid foundations, grounded, and valued with collective Blak leadership. We also feel that latawina represents our hopes for Aboriginal wellbeing through connections to Country, family and community. The artwork needs to represent this vision.

  1. Submissions are sought from Tasmanian Aboriginal artists and designers for a logo and design that will be used on advertising material and merchandise related to latawina.
  2. Artists are asked to submit a short description of the themes or concept for the design they would like to develop for this commission opportunity, along with up to three examples of previous artworks. Please note we do not require detailed designs at this stage, please attach examples of previous artwork only. You could also include your design portfolio, website link or resume if you have them.
  3. A selection panel will short-list two artists who will receive $750 each to develop a design proposal.
  4. Upon reviewing the proposals, one artist will be selected to deliver the final design.
  • We are seeking an artwork or design that includes an element which can act as a logo to represent latawina.
  • The final artwork or design should be suitable for use across a range of formats, including:
    • documents and reports
    • banners and signage
    • emails and digital communications
    • advertising material such as posters, pamphlets, flyers etc.
    • merchandise (e.g., pens, notebooks, mugs, etc.)
    • clothing items (e.g., ties, scarves, jumpers, t-shirts, uniforms)
    • online presence, including PowerPoint templates and webpages
  • The artwork or design should represent Tasmanian Aboriginal culture
  • The artwork or design should be developed with consideration of appropriate cultural protocols
  • The selected artist will be paid a $15,000 artist fee to deliver the final logo and design

The artist will be selected based on the strength and relevance of past portfolio work submitted in their application, as well as, how their short description and themes fit the brief.

The shortlisted artwork submissions will then be assessed against the following criteria:

  1. Creative vision: a creative or innovative vision in terms of concept and method
  2. Suitability: to what extent do the artistic concept and design address the brief and opportunity, including factoring cultural appropriateness and site specificity
  3. Capability: demonstrated experience and collaborative skillsets

The selection panel for this EOI consists of Emmaleen West (Aboriginal Project Officer, latawina, Blak Health Collective, UTAS), Jen Evans (Professor Aboriginal Health Leadership, UTAS), Wendy Aitken (Aboriginal Senior Research Fellow, UTAS) and Cindy Thomas (Indigenous Collections Coordinator and Curator, Cultural Collections, UTAS).
