Australian Maritime College named Defence consultancy of the year

The Australian Maritime College has been named Consultancy of the Year at the recent Defence Connect Australian Defence Industry Awards.

Recognising AMC’s commercial successes over the past 12 months, the Award highlight’s the impactful role the institution plays in supporting Australia’s maritime and defence sectors.

AMC Principal Michael van Balen said the institute’s training and consultancy division, AMC Search, was up against some of the top defence consultancies in the country.

“We do great work here in Tasmania that supports and strengthens Australia’s defence and national security capabilities, and we are proud to see that impact highlighted,” Mr Van Balen said.

EduCat is a micro Uncrewed Surface Vessel designed and constructed by the Australian Maritime College.

“Over the past 12 months, we have built our autonomous maritime systems training services for the Royal Australian Navy and provided specialised 3D maritime simulations for the development of a digital twin of Darwin Harbour for the Northern Territory Government.

“AMC was also recognised for the support we provide in employing Defence veterans and for our investment in autonomous marine systems research and development, which included the design and construction of EduCat, a micro Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV).”

EduCat is designed for training Defence personnel and has also been used by Defence in other consultancy projects, such as radar towing experiments.

Mr Van Balen said AMC had a strong history at the Defence Awards, having previously been a finalist and winner of categories including Academic Institution of the Year, Consultancy of the Year and Regional Small to Medium Enterprise of the Year.
