Tasmanians have been encouraged to “get curious” this month, with scientists taking over the streets across the state for National Science Week, running from August 12-20, 2023.

The program officially kicks off this weekend, featuring exhibitions, festivals, workshops, and performances showcasing everything from the science of beer, to the “fierce world” of female reproduction, to star-gazing with astronomers.

University of Tasmania science alumna, and National Science Week patron for Tasmania, Dr Jess Melbourne-Thomas said the benefits of sharing science with the community were enormous.

“The positive impacts of science on Tasmanians are huge – from career opportunities, to helping us to connect with our environments, and in informing ways that we can adapt to the impacts of climate change,” Dr Melbourne-Thomas said.

This year’s Science Week theme is ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries’; Dr Melbourne-Thomas said it perfectly captured what Tasmanian science and scientists can offer to the world, especially in terms of transitions to sustainable industries.

“Tasmania is also world-leading in our marine, Antarctic and climate change science,” she said.

“The extreme climate events we’ve seen this year in ocean and Antarctic environments clearly demonstrate the importance of this science on a global scale.”

University of Tasmania scientists and staff will also be sharing their knowledge for National Science Week across a range of activities:

National Science Week (Tasmania) continues to be supported by Inspiring Australia, the University of Tasmania, and the Tasmanian Government, along with hundreds of other volunteers and organisations who contribute to increasing science awareness in Tasmania.
