Introducing The Hedberg Sounds

Lifestyle | Newsroom

A new series of critically acclaimed performances gets underway at The Hedberg this month, showcasing Hobart’s home of intimate and unique music experiences.

The Hedberg Sounds program will present five diverse performances from local and national musicians in the acoustically sublime surrounds of the Ian Potter Recital Hall.

The program is an extension of a partnership between the Theatre Royal and the University of Tasmania.

Kicking off The Hedberg Sounds on March 23 will be salt-crusted musician and raconteur Mikelangelo (Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen) collaborating with Van Diemen’s Band in a riotous songbook of shanties, Songs of the Sea.

Other performances range from the all-saxophone Xyris Quartet to the healing aural cocoon of The Equinox Sound Baths, songs from the upheaval of 17th Century England and Scotland with Van Diemen’s Band’s Cloak & Dagger, and the acclaimed Australian String Quartet’s new concert, Aurora, a shimmering Scandi-influenced sound world.

“We are so lucky to have world class talent in Tasmania collaborating with the best artists from around the country, including graduates of the University’s Music courses. The Hedberg Sounds promises the most unique music experiences in Hobart this year, in our city’s most incredible music venue,” Theatre Royal CEO Simon Wellington said.

Located in the heart of Nipaluna/Hobart, The Hedberg brings together the Theatre Royal and the University of Tasmania in the state’s first world-class performing arts centre.

“Our partnership with the Theatre Royal has helped us develop a creative hub at The Hedberg where our music, performance and media students mix with artists, arts professionals and the broader community,” Executive Dean of the University’s College of Arts, Law and Education Professor Kate Darian-Smith said.

“The state-of-the-art Ian Potter Recital Hall is perfectly suited to intimate and immersive musical experiences for a diverse range of audiences.”

The new music program follows the introduction last year of The Hedberg Talks, an annual program of conversations with some of our most creative minds.
