Perfect blend of theory and practice launched Georgie's career in marketing

Bachelor of Business graduate Georgie Daly dreamed of an exciting career in marketing and is grateful she didn’t have to leave Tasmania to find it.

Georgie Daly always wanted to work for Red Bull’s marketing team. The atmosphere of high adrenaline events and extreme sport sounded like a dream lifestyle.

She isn’t there yet. But she’s also in no hurry.

Currently working as a marketing advisor and project manager for marketing and design agency S. Group in Launceston, Georgie is very much in her happy place.

“I can’t see myself moving on to anywhere else, I adore S. Group,” she said. “The doors it’s opened for me, the ongoing learning and opportunities, I’m so happy here.”

Born and raised in Launceston, Georgie studied her Bachelor of Business at the University of Tasmania’s Newnham Campus, specialising in Marketing.

She fell in love with Business Studies as a student at Scotch Oakburn College and knew she wanted to study marketing from the beginning.

After finishing grade 12, she initially enrolled to study her business degree at a Queensland university. But she quickly realised that she would rather be home in Tasmania.

“I had to leave Tassie for a while in order to appreciate Tassie, I think,” she said.

“I had that young person’s itch to go interstate, just like all my friends were. And then, when I did leave Tassie, I thought: why?! Everything here is great.”

Back in Launceston, she was able to transfer her studies to a Bachelor of Business at the University of Tasmania, graduating in 2021.

And while studying full-time, she was simultaneously working full-time for the Department of Education in various administrative roles.

Even though she mostly studied on campus, she said the ability to blend online study into her busy schedule had been essential.

“I loved that hybrid model, it was super flexible and the ability to do lectures and tutorials online was so valuable when I wasn’t always able to physically attend.

“I was able to catch up in my own time when I had the time to do so. And I still had the benefit of being able to go to physical lectures, ask questions in real time, meet people and converse, learn face-to-face.”

Having previously been introduced to S. Group director Sam Heberle through a social connection, Georgie knew it was where she wanted to work. And as soon as she graduated, she applied for a job as his assistant, determined to get a foot in the door at the agency.

“I was in the final two but I missed it,” she said. “I was really upset.

“But around that time a position came up with Bushby Property Group, to be their marketing coordinator. So I moved into that role and loved it.

“About 12 months later, when I was overseeing Bushby’s rebranding to The Agency, Sam approached me and asked me to join the marketing team at S. Group.

“I couldn’t not take that opportunity! But I was knee-deep in that branding changeover at the time and I made sure I finished what I’d started there before moving on.”

Georgie said it was a huge confidence boost to be picked up by S. Group, where she organises print and digital media, provides marketing strategies, and manages campaigns and social media accounts for a diverse range of clients.

“I was basically thrown in the deep end at S. Group. But because I had my degree behind me, I had a firm understanding of all the principles, and this was a chance to really put all that theory into real-world practice.”

Georgie said the Bachelor of Business degree is highly regarded in the workforce and having that formal qualification has been invaluable for many reasons.

“I wouldn’t have the career I have without it. It’s a resume boost, sure, but also for the knowledge it provided me with and the connections with the people I met along that way. The doors the degree opens, they make it worthwhile.”

“And I adore my job. I’m still learning every day. As someone who loves learning, it’s great to be able to still learn new things every day.

“There’s so much satisfaction in seeing something come to life. From sitting around a table with the branding team, discussing a concept, to seeing it out in the community and people responding to it. To see something you were part of creating, exist in the world, is so cool.

“And to be able to stay here in Tasmania to do it, and not need to go interstate or overseas, that’s the best.”

The Bachelor of Business teaches entrepreneurial thinking, analytical skills and innovation, to prepare you to turn your passion into a career. And there’s even a fast-track option so you can graduate and get out there in just two years.
