Barry Offoh - Master of Information Technology and Systems.
My journey of professional growth with a family-run accommodation offering, Oceana BnB.
Through my industry placement, I was hopeful I would gain a meaningful experience that would challenge and develop me. Oceana BnB, a family-run, tech-savvy boutique retreat based in Tasmania, offered exactly that. Additionally, the owner of the business and my supervisor were excellent examples of leaders, as I learned how to collaborate and work autonomously.
Starting as an IT Infrastructure Support Intern, I focused on hardware systems. But soon, I was entrusted with additional software responsibilities. This expanded role tested my technical and time management skills as I diagnosed system issues, configured Microsoft 365, implemented backup strategies, and enhanced guest media streaming.
One of my proudest achievements was modernising Oceana’s guest media service by recommending and implementing a shift from Windows DLNA to PLEX. I also introduced cloud-based backups, writing PowerShell scripts to automate key administrative tasks.
The experience wasn’t without challenges, as persistent system errors, steep learning curves, and coordinating across time zones as the owners retired and travelled. But through it all, I developed resilience, deeper technical expertise, and a clearer sense of my professional purpose.
