Finding beauty in the microscopic

Chloe is exploring neuroscience while building real-world skills in biomedicine.

Curiosity has always been the driving force for biomedicine student Chloe Malley. Now in her honours year at the University of Tasmania, Chloe is exploring the brain’s immune cells – known as microglia – and how they may play a role in motor neuron disease.

"I’ve always been fascinated by the human body and how everything fits together," she said. "I’m naturally curious, and research is about asking questions and finding answers. That’s what motivates me."

Chloe’s pathway into medical research began with a love of biology and chemistry at school. At university, she discovered how much she enjoyed the process of building a hypothesis, running experiments, and analysing data.

She also has a keen appreciation for where science and art intersect, the aesthetics and patterns found in nature. Her current project involves advanced imaging techniques, where she finds beauty in the microscopic.

"Looking at fluorescent cells under the microscope reminds me of the universe. The patterns and colours are stunning."

Beyond the lab, Chloe values the strong sense of community within the biomedicine program.

"The support here is amazing," she said. "Everyone wants to see you succeed, and there’s a real collaborative spirit."

Smaller class sizes and close connections with researchers have helped Chloe to build both confidence and practical experience, with hands-on learning a central focus of the biomedicine degree. And thanks to the scholarships she received, Chloe was able to focus on her studies without worrying about her living expenses.

Students have opportunities to work alongside experts at world-class facilities like the Menzies Institute for Medical Research and the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. Whether specialising in medical research or medical sciences, students build the practical skills that prepare them for careers in medicine, health, or laboratory research.

Looking ahead, Chloe hopes to continue into studying a PhD in neuroscience.

"There’s still so much to discover about the brain, and I want to make a difference through research before moving into teaching future scientists."
