From curiosity to career: Yan Li’s chemistry journey

Yan Li’s fascination with the microscopic world began with a simple curiosity about how things work at a molecular level. That early interest led him from China to the University of Tasmania, where he completed a Master of Applied Science (Chemistry) (now the Master of Chemistry) and later, a PhD in Analytical Chemistry. Today, he has built his life and career in Australia, working as an account manager for a leading scientific instrumentation company.

In his role, Li supports researchers across the country, including many at the University, helping advance the very scientific field that first inspired him.

"The University offered something unique: a strong international reputation in analytical chemistry, generous scholarships, and a close-knit, multicultural research environment," Li said.

"It gave me the space to discover my strengths, build confidence, and develop as both a scientist and a person."

In just nine months, during the research-intensive second year of Li’s master’s degree, under the supervision of Professor Brett Paull, he published three scientific papers. One of them even made the cover of Analytical Methods, a proud moment captured in a photo taken at the University’s School of Chemistry, where he stands beside that very cover.

That experience solidified his passion for analytical chemistry and led him to pursue a PhD with the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS). His work was again recognised, this time on the cover of Analytical Chemistry. During his PhD, he published 10 papers in peer-reviewed journals as the first author and was awarded the Dean’s Award for ‘Exceptional Performance by a Current Higher Degree by Research Candidate'.

Scholarships played a major role in shaping Li’s journey. A summer scholarship introduced him to research and led to a mentorship with Professor Mirek Macka, who became his PhD supervisor.

Financial support helped him focus fully on his studies and opened unexpected doors. It was also through the University of Tasmania that he met his wife, a fellow chemistry PhD student.

"We met at the School of Chemistry, fell in love, and built a life together," he said. "That is something I will always be thankful to UTAS for."

For Li, Tasmania became more than a place to study; it became his home. "The peaceful environment, the sense of community, the support from staff, everything about my experience helped me grow," he said.

"UTAS didn’t just give me an education, it gave me a future."

Li pursued the Analytical Chemistry specialisation, drawn to its practical applications and real-world impact. The Master of Chemistry also offers a Synthetic Chemistry stream, giving students the flexibility to follow their interests, whether in solving complex problems or designing new compounds and materials.
