Zoe Zhao - Bachelor of Information Technology Graduate, Major in Business Analysis
I recently graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Information Technology degree, major in Business Analysis. I was always curious about how technology supports business decisions, and this interest grew stronger during my final year of high school. I wasn’t completely sure at first if ICT was right for me, but I knew I wanted to gain skills that could help solve real-world problems. That’s what motivated me to start my journey at the University of Tasmania.
During my studies, I faced some challenges, especially during group projects when everyone had different ideas. However, looking back, those experiences helped me understand the importance of teamwork and communication in the ICT field. One of the key moments in my learning was working on a capstone project with TechUp Tasmania, where my team developed an onboarding system. It was the first time I really saw how our classroom knowledge could turn into a working solution. That project helped me realise that I enjoy working closely with clients and understanding their needs.
The degree taught me more than just technical skills. I improved my soft skills like presenting ideas, writing reports, and working with different types of people. These skills became especially useful during my internship.
Right now, I’m doing my internship with the Australian government in ICT support, and at the same time, I am actively looking for full-time roles in business analysis, data support, or tech consulting. My goal is to work with a group that uses data and intelligent systems to support the growth of organisations. I believe the combination of my studies, internship, and project work has prepared me to start this journey with confidence.
To any student starting their study journey in ICT: be open to learning from every experience. It’s okay to feel unsure at the start - just keep exploring, ask questions, and try new things. Especially for international students, it's important to make the first move. I know it can be hard starting from zero in a new environment, but don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Join events, talk to your classmates, and say yes to opportunities - even small ones. Every step counts, and over time, those small efforts will build your confidence, network, and experience.
