Leadership that shows up: from theory to the frontline

Study

Leadership in healthcare is often talked about, but what does it look like in practice?

For Susan Gilbert, Professional Development Partner at Northern Sydney Local Health District, the Graduate Certificate in Leadership (Health and Human Services) not only challenged her thinking but empowered her to translate theory into real-world practice.

“There was obviously the theory around leadership and that sort of underpinning knowledge that you have to know, but there was so much more, so many practical aspects as well,” Susan said.

Even after some time post completing the course, Susan still draws on its readings and insights and credits the experience with making her a stronger, more effective educator.

“I think it's made me a better educator because I'm passing on a lot of that knowledge that I learned and some of those light bulb moments and even just tips and tricks I'm passing on that to other people, which is really sort of satisfying. So not only am I using it for my own development, but I’m able to support our younger leaders.”

Susan noted that while she does not formally hold a managerial position, the study has strengthened her ability to support and guide emerging leaders.

“My focus is learning and development. And I am closely supporting our graduate start nurses and the students that we have on placement around leadership, communication, management and how to have difficult conversations.”

She acknowledged balancing study and life is a challenge, but it’s manageable and there’s excellent support available from both the university and fellow students.

“I think that was one of the things that I really enjoyed most, that contact with others and everybody's there for the same reason. They're all wanting to improve their leadership or they're wanting to move on in their career. It's that sense of working together and achieving together,” she said.

Susan’s experience highlights that leadership in healthcare isn’t confined to formal titles, it’s reflected in everyday actions, conversations, and the ability to influence and support others.

Through her studies, she has not only strengthened her own practice but is helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals. Her journey is a reminder that with the right tools, support, and commitment, meaningful leadership can be developed at any stage of a career.
