Cycling is a great way to get to campus. All campuses offer a range of bicycle facilities from standard bike racks near entrances to most buildings, individual bike lockers on the Sandy Bay, Newnham and Domain campuses and secure rooms in the Medical Science Precinct and at IMAS. Major bike hubs have repair stations and water stations and most have publicly accessible showers in the nearby building.
There are just a few things to remember when bringing your bicycle to campus:
- Park your bike in designated bicycle racks or lockers provided on all campuses.
- Police recommend that bicycles be secured with a good quality bike lock; cable locks and chains are less secure than U-shaped steel locks. Make sure you take your bike lock with you when you collect your bike.
- University roads are public roads and therefore public road rules apply. For example, you need to wear your helmet and comply with speed limits on University roads. Also, you must dismount when taking your bike along walkways on campus.
- Bicycles attached to trees, handrails or fixtures on access ramps will be removed by campus security; bicycles or bike locks left on campus for long periods of time will be considered abandoned and may be removed. Enquiries relating to abandoned, removed or stolen bicycles should be directed to campus Security.
All campuses offer a range of bicycle facilities, from standard bike racks near entrances to most buildings, to individual bike lockers at Sandy Bay, Newnham, Domain and Inveresk, and secure bike rooms at IMAS and the Medical Science Precinct in Hobart.
Bicycling facilities are currently being reviewed and efforts made to improve and add to what is currently available. Cycling facilities are marked on campus maps for Hobart, Launceston and Burnie campuses. See the campus maps page for details.
Bike lockers are available on the Sandy Bay, Newnham and Domain campuses (see the above maps for locations).
On the Sandy Bay campus, eight vertical bike lockers are located on the Dobson Road side of the Morris Miller Library building and six horizontal bike lockers with electric bike charging points (standard 240V power points; user required to supply own charging cable) are located between Alexander Street and Dobson Road (across from the Engineering main entrance). There are 10 horizontal lockers available at various locations on the Newnham campus and five horizontal lockers on the Domain campus near the entrance to Nursing and Midwifery.Lockers can be hired free of charge. To hire a locker:
Bicycle parking facilities that are kept secure via access control or a manual locking mechanism must not be left open. Penalties may apply to anyone providing unauthorised access to bicycle parking areas and secured facilities.
The University does not accept any liability for damage to or theft of bicycles and related equipment. Bicycles left for long periods of time will be considered abandoned and may be removed. Enquiries relating to abandoned, removed or stolen bicycles should be directed to Security on 6226 7600 (Hobart) or 6324 3336 (Launceston and Cradle Coast).
