Students cap off extraordinary 2020 with celebration of success

Newsroom

After a year full of challenge and uncertainty, more than 5000 scholars will be proudly celebrating their academic achievements this month.

University of Tasmania summer graduations are proceeding across the State, with the first ceremony taking place in Burnie on Wednesday, 2 December.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black said the University was proud and delighted to be celebrating student success as the end of 2020 draws near.

“Our graduating cohort has made it through what has been an exceptionally challenging academic year,” Professor Black said.

“They have demonstrated courage, resilience and determination in overcoming the constraints of a changing world to reach an important milestone which acknowledges and celebrates all they have achieved.

“I extend a heartfelt congratulations to our Class of 2020 and wish them all the very best as they embark on their next journey of sharing what they have learnt at our University with communities all around the world.”

The University’s graduation and events teams have been working hard to evolve and adapt our ceremonies so that students can experience this symbolic rite of passage, albeit slightly different, which they have well and truly earned.

To ensure all ceremonies are delivered in line with COVID-safe requirements, we will be holding a larger number of smaller ceremonies. The ceremonies will be ticketed, which will support contact tracing if required, and an adjusted seating format will ensure the events comply with physical distancing restrictions.

Students who were due to attend the University’s postponed winter graduation events have been invited to participate in this month’s summer series.

Following the Burnie Graduation event, ceremonies will move to Launceston (9 – 10 December), and then Hobart (15 – 19 December).
