Introduction
The unit explores connections to Country through the sharing of Aboriginal knowledges to facilitate voice and agency. The unit focuses on the life, history and culture of Tasmanian Aboriginal people from invasion to the 1950's and will examine the impact of invasion on land and people through the ‘Black Wars’ to Government Policies such as the Cape Barren Island Reserve Act whilst celebrating the cultural connections we continue today.
Students will use yarns, discussion posts, writing pieces and readings to critically reflect alongside an ‘On Country’ trip to meet the learning outcomes of the unit. This unit prepares students to navigate the intersection of Aboriginal and Western Knowledge systems to empower their own voice and agency to achieve the study skills necessary to continue their educational pathways.
*In palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines today, tunapri means 'to know' and milaythina means 'country'.
