Chemistry XPD009
Introduction
Chemistry aims to (i) promote knowledge and understanding around the central concepts and theories appropriate to the study of chemistry at a pre-tertiary level, (ii) explore the language of chemistry, including symbols and models used to describe, explain and predict chemical behaviour, (iii) develop scientific skills and attitudes, including techniques of operation, recording observations and aspects of safety, (iv) interpret and use a range of chemical information from qualitative and quantitative investigations and (v) analyse the interaction of chemical processes with people and the environment.
The content in this unit is an amalgamation of two original units, Chemistry Organic Compounds and Physical Chemistry. The two units have been amalgamated into one unit in order to provide greater continuity with more study hours that will be delivered over one semester. This is seen as an improvement over the two shorter units that were to have been delivered separately in two terms.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the central concepts and theories appropriate to the study of chemistry at this level
- Apply chemical principles and theories to predict and explain the chemical and physical properties of substances, their structure and the interactions that take place between them
- Demonstrate scientific skills and attitudes, including techniques of operation, recording observations and aspects of safety
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills from experimental and theoretical approaches and correctly solve related calculations
- Interpret and use a range of chemical information from qualitative (redox reactions) and quantitative (enthalpy changes) investigations
