Courses & Units

Physics XPD016

Introduction

This unit aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of physics, as well as interacting with data, applying and evaluating information and solving problems. Students gain experimental skills through practical investigations and interaction with concepts and experimental information. The content in this unit is an amalgamation of two original unit, Physics -Electromagnetism and Atomic Physics and Physics – Mechanical and Wave Systems. The two units have been amalgamated into one unit in order to provide greater continuity with more study hours that will be delivered over one semester. This is seen as an improvement over the two shorter units that were to have been delivered separately in two terms.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the central concepts and theories appropriate to the study of physics (notably electricity & electromagnetism and atomic physics) at this level
  • Apply physical science principles and theories to predict and explain electricity concepts (current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, induction, power), and atomic physics (radioactivity and nuclear reactions)
  • Demonstrate scientific skills and attitudes, including techniques of operation, recording observations and aspects of safety
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills from experimental and theoretical approaches and correctly solve related calculations
  • Interpret and use a range of physical information from qualitative and quantitative investigations
