Introduction

This unit develops pedagogical knowledge for teaching literacy, mathematics and science in early childhood, with references to STEM and STEAM integration. Using an Early Childhood lens, key approaches and pedagogies are explored to evaluate their significance on early development in these pivotal learning areas. The unit reflects upon early learning in diverse contexts with an emphasis on the role of place, families and communities. It encourages students to consider the value of play and inquiry-based pedagogies; and how to weave concepts of sustainability through exposure to natural and built environments. Throughout the unit, students will have opportunities to apply and extend their knowledge, skills, and understandings in authentic ways, ensuring meaningful connections between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Teaching Pattern	Off Campus:  Weekly online lectures or equivalent (2 hours), weekly content engagement (6 hours) and weekly collaborative learning (2 hours) Asynchronous Learning: Due to the online nature of this Unit, your engagement will encompass weekly lectures, readings, tasks and discussions, and the completion of assignment work. It is expected that you will timetable 10 hours of study time per week, realising that this includes time spent reading or viewing resources provided to you, searching for additional information and resources necessary for the completion of assessment tasks and other activities, and participating in regular tasks and online discussions. In this unit, your active engagement will be monitored in the following ways: 1.    Consistent engagement with the unit materials (e.g., online modules, readings and resources) 2.    Routine completion and submission of activity responses 3.    Regular contributions to group discussions and peer feedback. You are encouraged to engage with unit materials, activities and discussions soon as possible. Remember that units are planned assuming (and recommending) an average of 10 hours engagement each week for each unit that you are enrolled in.
