Introduction

This unit explores linguistics as an academic discipline, with a strong focus on its practical relevance to language learning and teaching. A central idea underpinning this unit is the vital role that language awareness plays in preparing teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages. Students will engage with core concepts and principles of linguistics and second language acquisition, and develop their understanding of key domains including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The unit also examines contemporary approaches to teaching grammar and considers the relationship between linguistic awareness and language awareness in the classroom. Teaching Pattern	Weekly content in MyLO (10 hours), Active Learning PauseCasts as outlined in the Unit Schedule (3 hours per study period), and Assessment Preparation Workshops (3 hours per study period). This Unit is fully online. Engagement is monitored through participation in scheduled online tutorials, discussion around readings, tasks as set in MyLO weekly content, and timely and meaningful contributions to the MyLO discussion boards, as well as through the completion of assignment tasks.
