Introduction
This unit explores the relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians, examining First Nations diversity, including language, culture, and the varied impacts of colonisation. It also considers broader cultural and linguistic diversity (CALD), including the relationship between language and culture and the educational needs of EAL/D students. It encourages critical reflection and ethical engagement with racial and social injustices to foster reconciliation, cultural safety, and inclusion through culturally and linguistically responsive curriculum, pedagogy, and practice. In doing so, it provides both a theoretical and practical grounding to develop your skills as a transformative educator, capable of connecting with community, supporting diverse learners, fostering restorative justice, and working towards reconciliation and flourishing within and through education.
